Modality of Acupuncture

There are several different types of acupuncture to treat a disease as some of them listed below.

  • Traditional Chinese acupuncture - Most commonly used type. Good for general pain syndromes and internal diseases. (refer to our link to Acupuncture on the main page)

  • Ear acupuncture - Originated from China. However, a French physician, Dr. Norgier fully developed this type of acupuncture, and now it is widely used in Europe. In America, ear acupuncture is used mainly for drug detox, alcoholism, quit smoking and weight loss. NADA (National Addiction & Detoxification Association) is authorized to provide intensive training and certificate program to the healthcare practitioners who are willing to utilize ear acupuncture.

  • Scalp acupuncture - Originated from China. Effective especially for post-stroke problems (e.g. paralysis of limbs)

  • Hand acupuncture - Originated from Korea.

  • Trigger point acupuncture - Westernized acupuncture. Needles are inserted at the tender points. Good for musculoskeletal problems (e.g. neck pain, low back pain)

  • Low level laser acupuncture - Non-needle acupuncture. (refer to our link to Low Level Laser Therapy)

  • EAV (Electro Acupuncture by Voll) - Originated from a German physician, Dr. Voll. (refer to our link to Electro Dermal Screening)

  • Master Tung's acupuncture - Originated from one of the most famous acupuncturists in Taiwan, Master. Tung. Currently used by many acupuncturists in the US. Effective for any pain conditions and internal diseases.

At our clinic, Richard Fortune utilizes traditional Chinese acupuncture,  EAV and ear acupuncture most of time, while Jeongeun Fortune uses traditional Chinese acupuncture, ear acupuncture, trigger point acupuncture, low level laser acupuncture and Master Tung's acupuncture to treat different conditions more effectively.

Intensity of Acupuncture

Once we decide what type of acupuncture to use for your condition, we have to decide how much stimulation to apply. Basically there are 3 levels of intensity.

  • Basic stimulation - Needles are inserted and left without any further stimulation for about 30 minutes.

  • Medium stimulation - Needles are inserted and manual stimulation by the doctor is applied occasionally.

  • Strong stimulation - Needles are inserted and electric stimulation device is attached to the needles.

People have different responsiveness to acupuncture. Some people are very sensitive to acupuncture treatment and need basic stimulation only. Otherwise, it may cause temporary exacerbation of pain that will disappear within 1-2 days. On the other hand, there are people who need a strong stimulation to get any effect. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict a person's responsiveness to acupuncture.

Therefore, at our clinic we try basic stimulation or medium stimulation on your first visit and see how you respond. Then we modify your next treatment plan accordingly.

Frequency of Acupuncture

How many treatments do you need? It depends on several factors. First, longer you have had the pain, longer it may take to get rid of it. Second, complexity of the condition is another decision maker. We carefully evaluate your condition  to determine how may organs and meridians are involved with the condition. More organs and systems are involved, longer it may take to treat it. Third, your overall health is an important factor to decide how many acupuncture sessions you need. A person with sufficient qi and blood responds quickly to any acupuncture treatment.

We tell our patients that it takes about 3 treatments to decide if acupuncture can help their condition. If you do not see any improvement after 3 treatments, acupuncture may not be able to help you at all. However, any degree of relief of pain or improvement indicates acupuncture is a good modality for you. It is just a matter of how long it will take to get the lasting relief of pain.

For musculoskeletal problems: After the first treatment you may have some improvement that lasts 2-3 hours. After the second treatment, the effect may last for 1-2 days. After the third treatment, you may have a relief of pain for a week or longer. You may need a few more treatments to get the lasting relief, or you may not need any further treatment at all after the third treatment!

For internal problems: It may take a few treatments to see an improvement since most of the internal diseases are chronic in nature.
